    HispaVeg: a new online vegetation plot database for Spain

    We describe a new online database, named HispaVeg, which currently holds data from 2663 vegetation plots of Spanish woodlands, scrublands and grasslands. Unlike other similar databases, a detailed description of the structure is stored with the floristic data of each plot (i.e., number and physiognomy of the vertical layers, cover values for each layer).Most of the vegetation plots are large rectangles (400 to 2000 square meters) with an average of 34 species per plot. The survey dates range from 1956 to present, with most of the records between 1964 and 1994. The elevation of the plots ranges from 0 to 2880, with most of the plots between 300 and 1500 m. HispaVeg is freely available to the scientific community. Users can query the online database, view printable reports for each plot and download spreadsheet-like raw data for subsets of vegetation plots

    Asymptotic properties and optimization of some non-Markovian stochastic processes

Assuming these processes depend on a control parameter we show that the optimization of the control can be reduced to a problem of nonlinear optimization. Under certain hypotheses we establish the stability of such optimization problems

    A data generator for covid-19 patients’ care requirements inside hospitals

    [EN] A Spanish version of the article is provided (see section before references). This paper presents the generation of a plausible data set related to the needs of COVID-19 patients with severe or critical symptoms. Possible illness’ stages were proposed within the context of medical knowledge as of January 2021. The parameters chosen in this data set were customized to fit the population data of the Valencia region (Spain) with approximately 2.5 million inhabitants. They were based on the evolution of the pandemic between September 2020 and March 2021, a period that included two complete waves of the pandemic. Contrary to expectation and despite the European and national transparency laws (BOE-A2013-12887, 2013; European Parliament and Council of the European Union, 2019), the actual COVID-19 pandemic-related data, at least in Spain, took considerable time to be updated and made available (usually a week or more). Moreover, some relevant data necessary to develop and validate hospital bed management models were not publicly accessible. This was either because these data were not collected, because public agencies failed to make them public (despite having them indexed in their databases), the data were processed within indicators and not shown as raw data, or they simply published the data in a format that was difficult to process (e.g., PDF image documents versus CSV tables). Despite the potential of hospital information systems, there were still data that were not adequately captured within these systems. Moreover, the data collected in a hospital depends on the strategies and practices specific to that hospital or health system. This limits the generalization of "real" data, and it encourages working with "realistic" or plausible data that are clean of interactions with local variables or decisions (Gunal, 2012; Marin-Garcia et al., 2020). Besides, one can parameterize the model and define the data structure that would be necessary to run the model without delaying till the real data become available. Conversely, plausible data sets can be generated from publicly available information and, later, when real data become available, the accuracy of the model can be evaluated (Garcia-Sabater and Maheut, 2021). This work opens lines of future research, both theoretical and practical. From a theoretical point of view, it would be interesting to develop machine learning tools that, by analyzing specific data samples in real hospitals, can identify the parameters necessary for the automatic prototyping of generators adapted to each hospital. Regarding the lines of research applied, it is evident that the formalism proposed for the generation of sound patients is not limited to patients affected by SARS-CoV-2 infection. The generation of heterogeneous patients can represent the needs of a specific population and serve as a basis for studying complex health service delivery systems.[ES] En este trabajo se presenta cómo se ha generado un conjunto de datos verosímiles relacionados con las necesidades de pacientes covid-19 con síntomas severe or critical. Se considerarán las etapas posibles con los conocimientos médicos a fecha de enero de 2021. Los parámetros elegidos en este data set están personalizados para adecuarse a los valores poblacionales de la región de Valencia (Spain), unos 2.5 Millones de habitantes y la evolución de la pandemia entre los meses de septiembre 2020 y marzo 2021, un periodo de tiempo que contemple dos olas completas de pandemia.En contra de lo que cabría esperar, a pesar de la ley de transparencia europea y nacional (BOE-A-2013-12887, 2013; Parlamento Europeo y del Consejo de la Unión Europea, 2019), los datos reales relacionados con la pandemia covid-19, al menos en España, tardan mucho en actualizarse y estar disponibles (normalmente una semana o más días). Además, algunos datos relevantes para trabajar los modelos de gestión de camas de hospital no están accesibles públicamente. Bien porque no se hayan recogido esos datos, o porque los organismos públicos no los ofrecen (a pesar de tenerlos indexados en sus bases de datos), o los ofrecen camuflados en indicadores procesados y no muestran los datos en bruto, o simplemente los publican en un formato de difícil reutilización (por ejemplo, en documentos PDF en lugar de en tablas CSV). A pesar de que los sistemas de información de los hospitales son bastante potentes, siguen existiendo datos que ni siquiera están recogidos adecuadamente en el sistema de información de salud.Por otra parte, los datos recogidos en un hospital dependen de las estrategias y practicas propias de ese hospital o sistema de salud. Este efecto limita la generalización de los datos “reales” y es necesario trabajar con datos “realistas” o verosímiles que están limpios de interacciones con variables o decisiones locales (Gunal, 2012; Marin-Garcia et al., 2020). Por un lado, se puede parametrizar el modelo y definir la estructura de datos que sería necesaria para ejecutar el modelo con datos reales.     In the famous movie “2001: A Space Odyssey”, Stanley Kubrick and Arthur Clarke claim that an extraterrestrial civilization catalyzed the evolution of hominids on our planet. To represent such a powerful civilization, they use a crystal. To date, it seems that we have not been contacted by advanced civilizations and that we are alone to manage our own future. Yet Kubrick and Clarke perhaps intuitively touched a truth about the power of crystals. An argument is developed here that genuine crystals, mainly quartz single crystals, were the earliest catalysts of the abstract thinking, symbolism, and consciousness

    Synergism between the low-level jet and organized convection at its exit region

    Previous studies suggest that the enhanced meridional extent of some South American low-level jet events (known as Chaco jets) is a consequence of a positive feedback between the low-level wind and strong convection that is usually observed at their exit region. To assess how this interaction takes place, a Chaco low-level jet event observed between 18 and 19 December 2002 (i.e., during the South America Low-Level Jet Experiment) and the associated mesoscale convective system that evolved at its exit region have been selected to perform numerical experiments where diabatic heating effects associated with phase changes can be quantified. This case study has also been used to analyze the diurnal oscillations related to planetary boundary layer (PBL) mechanisms in order to describe whether the observed evolution of the low-level wind can be explained either by PBL-related forcing or by the interaction with convection. The sensitivity experiments confirm that there is a positive feedback at low levels between convection and the northerly wind flow that becomes accelerated and also aids in the identification of a strong coupling between organized convection and the upper-level circulation, resulting in an increase of the upper-level jet strength downstream of the simulated precipitation area. A conceptual model of how these systems (i.e., convection, low- and upper-level jets) mutually interact is proposed, which differs from coupling mechanisms documented for the Great Plains low-level jet.Fil: Saulo, Andrea Celeste.     Some singularities of the medical degree program might alter the development of new training and teaching activities that involve the active participation of undergraduate students. As a result of the initial experience in conducting the first edition of a national congress for medical students in Francisco de Vitoria University (Madrid, Spain), the difficulties encountered during its planning and direction are detailed. The solutions adopted are presented with the aim of facilitating the organization of future similar events.Algunas de las singularidades que presenta el plan de formación del grado en Medicina podrían alterar los planes de desarrollo de nuevas actividades formativas y docentes que impliquen la participación activa de los alumnos de pregrado.     La gestión del talento y la búsqueda propia, debe ir acompañado de una eficaz política empresarial, orientada a la conservación de los trabajadores destacados. El trabajo fue realizado en el Ayuntamiento de Alicante, en una población de 27 sujetos pertenecientes a cuatro departamentos distintos, seleccionados de forma aleatoria. Los datos se recogieron mediante encuesta, con diferentes variables, dividido en dos partes temáticas: una primera donde se reúnen las preguntas relacionadas con las variables y una segunda con datos sociodemográficos. Se pretende mostrar y analizar qué factores son más relevantes, de algunas retribuciones directas e indirectas en trabajadores del Ayuntamiento de Alicante (en adelante TBA) en su puesto de trabajo, y contrastar retribuciones similares con otros estudios, orden de importancia, etc.

    Integration of a Canine Agent in a Wireless Sensor Network for Information Gathering in Search and Rescue Missions

    Search and rescue operations in the context of emergency response to human or natural disasters have the major goal of finding potential victims in the shortest possible time. Multi-agent teams, which can include specialized human respondents, robots and canine units, complement the strengths and weaknesses of each agent, like all-terrain mobility or capability to locate human beings. However, efficient coordination of heterogeneous agents requires specific means to locate the agents, and to provide them with the information they require to complete their mission. The major contribution of this work is an application of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) to gather information from a multi-agent team and to make it available to the rest of the agents while keeping coverage. In particular, a canine agent has been equipped with a mobile node installed on a harness, providing information about the dog’s location as well as gas levels. The configuration of the mobile node allows for flexible arrangement of the system, being able to integrate static as well as mobile nodes. The gathered information is available at an external database, so that the rest of the agents and the control center can use it in real time. The proposed scheme has been tested in realistic scenarios during search and rescue exercises

    New design parameters for biparabolic beach profiles (SW Cadiz, Spain)

    165 profiles of seventy-one beaches along the Gulf of Cadiz (SW, Spain) were studied to improve the formulation of the beach profile in tidal seas. Maritime climate, degree of energy exposure and size of the sand grains were taken into account to study the two sections of the biparabolic profile. The objective of the study was the determination of more accurate formulations of the design parameters for the equilibrium profile that involves tidal seas. These formulations were modelled and validated based on existing profiles to quantify the error existing between the real profile and the modelling. This comparative analysis was extended by considering the formulations proposed by other authors. The best results were obtained with the proposal presented herein

    CareFall: Automatic Fall Detection through Wearable Devices and AI Methods

    The aging population has led to a growing number of falls in our society, affecting global public health worldwide. This paper presents CareFall, an automatic Fall Detection System (FDS) based on wearable devices and Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods. CareFall considers the accelerometer and gyroscope time signals extracted from a smartwatch. Two different approaches are used for feature extraction and classification: i) threshold-based, and ii) machine learning-based. Experimental results on two public databases show that the machine learning-based approach, which combines accelerometer and gyroscope information, outperforms the threshold-based approach in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. This research contributes to the design of smart and user-friendly solutions to mitigate the negative consequences of falls among older people.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, 2 table
